Air Pollution

Air quality

Air quality is a measure of the suitability of air for breathing by people, plants and animals in terms of potential health effects.

Poor air quality affects quality of life now and for future generations. It can affect:

  • our health
  • environment
  • businesses economy
  • the town’s liveability

Health impacts

Studies show that more people die each year from pollution related illnesses than from car accidents. Air pollution affects our health, particularly in children, older people and those with allergic and respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Health problems can include:

  • more frequent asthma attacks
  • emphysema
  • aggravated angina
  • irritated eyes, nose, throat and lungs
  • coughing, wheezing and bronchial restriction

Local sources of pollution include:

  • vehicles
  • industry
  • wood heaters
  • paint
  • bushfires and back-burning
